| 24 hour work shifts are not uncommon in EMS services, paid as well as volunteer. Many volunteer EMS organizations have personnel "on-call" for 24 hour periods; most of whom work full time jobs. In either situation, a lack of rest and proper amount of sleep will have impacts on the providers ability to process data, make decisions and be aware of incipient changes to their patients. Sleep deprivation is not a new phenomenon. It has been present since man was placed on the earth. This meta-analysis will review current studies, present relevant concepts of sleep deprivation and a discussion of how this affects provider | ||
