8:45 - 10:15   5a  Obesity "The Bariatric Challenge"

Cy Stockoff, EMT-P  Central New Mexico Community College EMS Program Director.

  This presentation will explore how obesity affects every aspect of EMS. Special emphasis will be placed on: anatomical and physiologic differences, lifting and moving, drug dosing, airway management and medical procedural differences.
 

1.5 hours Special Considerations CE

  Target Audience: Primarily Basic level but advanced airways and how to modify advanced procedures as well as how to modify drug calculations will be presented.
   
  5b  Hablais ISBARQ?

  We will discuss how EMS and hospital providers can work together as a team and focus on Patient Safety and Quality of Care.  ISBARQ is a national standard for patient hand off communications.

6a  Altered Mental Status: The Great Confuser

  Altered Mental Status (AMS) is a common complaint encountered by EMS. This is a simplified approach to a complex complaint focusing on etiology which can be recognized and/or treated in the field.

  This session will cover many aspects of airway care, starting with BLS up to ALS and rescue airways. Hands-on skills lab will be covered for the last part of the class.

7a  Crime Scene & Evidence Management for EMS Personnel

Deputy Richard Malone  Chief Medical Investigator, OMI Gallup, NM

  EMS personnel are often the first professionals present at the scene of a crime or serious motor vehicle crash. How they perceive and treat evidence from that scene can make or break a case later in court. This presentation deals with the recognition and management of different types of evidence including firearms, ballistics, serology, drugs, paraphernalia and confessions. Emergency care providers will gain new confidence in managing scenes and evidence.

7b  Homophobia & Transphobia in Emergency Services

Jona Olsson  Fire Chief Latir Fire Dept and Director cultural bridges to justice

  How do our stereotypes and fears about lesbians, gay men, bisexual or transsexual people affect our customer service and emergency personnel? In this session we will clarify the LGBTQI "alphabet soup", debunk some common myths and sterotypes, and explore ways to affirm gay or trans personnel and improve our services to LGBTQI community members.

7c  Airway Ventilation – Pediatrics  - - SESSION IS FULL

CLOSED SESSION FULL   This skills station will help you practice intubating children on manikins. We will discuss and practice with alternative airways, including BVM.
